What is hypnosis?

"It's nothing like what I imagined. I was aware of everything around me. It was great!" - EB (Jersey)

Have you ever been so absorbed in a book or TV programme that everything else around you has been excluded from your mind?  Have you ever been driving along and not notice you've passed the turning you wanted?  Do you always remember locking the door behind you?  Have you ever seen an advertisement on a poster or on TV and felt you should go out and by it?

These are all commonly occurring examples of going into or being in hypnosis. Hypnosis is a natural state of deep relaxation and inner awareness. In fact, we pass through hypnosis on the way to and from sleep on a daily basis, so we can recognise it as a very pleasant and comfortable state of being.

The first rule of thumb about hypnosis is to forget what you may have heard or seen with regard to stage hypnotism. The perception is that the 'subjects' are in a semi-comatose state, unaware of their surroundings, and unable to control what they say, think, feel or do. Well, this could not be further from the truth. Hypnosis is a very consensual state. It means that no one can force it upon you, and no one can make you do things that are against your will or beliefs.

It is very important that you realise that you are always in the driver's seat, and your thoughts, images, feelings and beliefs are your own.

Important Principle:

Hypnotherapy does not in any way replace standard medical procedures or treatment, but works in conjunction with medical treatment by freeing the patient of feelings and attitudes that may be inhibiting his or her natural immunising or other vital processes. Hypnosis helps create strong mental expectancy and reduces stress, thereby attempting to normalise the action of the autonomic nervous system.
